When dying, our breathing changes, the blood in our veins move a little slower - suspiciously, more cautiously, as if taking one last tour of a foreign body. Our organs reminisce on suppers of oxygen, appetite eludes, energy wanes and finally in the end, some people become more restless while others remain calm. I think our bodies know we are dying long before we do. The way the past sits next to the present tells us everything about life. Before Christ, men spoke of his coming. Before death, we always knew we were endings. It is said that a man cannot intentionally surprise himself, yet it never fails to startle our souls when we are called home to eternity, as if this temporary place holds more power than God. How poorly we manage ourselves. Inevitably, it is not demons we are always fighting, but rather, mishandled emotions, fragile egos, and volatile thoughts identifying as self. What will it profit a man if he gains the world, but loses his soul?
